On The Town

Where have I been? Rockin' and a-rollin', pretty much.

I recently became unemployed. The company I worked for declared bankruptcy on June 1st, and then it was just a waiting game before the doors were locked. For a while it looked like we were gonna make it, but alas... Actually, I hated the job. I was totally into the idea of doing no work and scoring the paychecks, you know? While looking for a better job.

Luckily I scored a pretty cool freelance gig which allows me to work from home. I cannot even begin to tell you what having NO COMMUTE means to me... As long as I've lived in my plush Silverlake digs, I've had to drive to work on the westside. For you non Angelenos, this means a 12 mile drive which takes about an hour and a half. Each way.

My car loves hanging out in the garage now.

So I roll out of bed and get to work, take a break for a walk and when the sun comes blasting through my window. Then I can work some more in the cool evening breeze. It rules.

And without that drive, I've got more time and energy to spend with friends. That also rules.

So I went to some shows!

Dappled Cities came to town, taking a night off from their tour with Tokyo Police Club to do a show of their own at the Echo. I had seen these boys play at the Hopetoun Hotel in Sydney back in January, and was looking forward to seeing them while not under the influence of various substances because they seemed really good. And nice. And they were! Kind of a Modest Mouse/XTC flavor, their quirky indie pop is just accessible enough to not be alienating and still just off kilter enough to keep it interesting. I got to interview them just before the show, but sadly I couldn't use it because the band playing downstairs drowned out some of their clever responses. But I can say that they are nice, silly, and living in the States for the next few months so catch them the next time they are in town - which will probably be in the fall. Oh, and they dropped the "Fly" part from their name because "we've grown up since then." Cute.

Then Kevs, Ritchie & I went to check out Machine Gun Blues. The boys had seen this Denver band at a YMCA or something at the South Park music festival a year ago, and I'd heard nothing except raves for these rowdy rockers who worked the crowd up into such a frenzy that everyone was a sweaty naked mess by the end, running into the snow for relief. Well, that didn't happen at the Knitting Factory that night (does anything quite like that ever really happen in LA?), but the bands rocked with their cocks (almost) out, writhed on the floor, and generally made me feel like slamming my body into something hard. Which is a good thing.

The next night, Raquel and I went to check out the 5 O'clock Somewhere show at the Echo. They had been doing a residency which was turning into alot of fun. The band consists of a bunch of people from other bands, most of whom are also bartenders at eastside watering holes, doing a bunch of country songs (originals and covers, as far as I can tell). I got to do a little waltzin' with a big dude, which is a-ok by me.

And then, M.I.A . So the BFF, Raquel, Kevs and myself hauled ourselves to the EchoplexBoyz, and got sweaty real fast. I had somehow scored tix to the second show at the Echoplex, the first having sold out in milliseconds. She played quite a few new tracks (XR2, Bird Flu, Jimmy) and a smattering of old. The old ones, of course, got the crowd beyond pumped. The new ones, though, were a bit more challenging for the average dancers in the crowd, as the beats were pretty erratic at times. Is her new genre Difficult Dance? I'll have to wait for the CD. It was a good time anyway!

A couple days later, I get an email from Kevs: "Are you going to You Am I on Wednesday?" WHAT? I wasn't keeping track of those Aussies since I've already seen them 6 times this year, and before that, I'd seen them twice over a period of 10 years. They never came to this country, and now suddenly they won't leave? No problem! So Kevs, Ritchie and I set out for NME night at Spaceland, where the Wombats and the Redwalls filled out the bill. The Wombats were very cute and British, extremely poppy with tight little harmonies that they showed off acapella style from time to time. The Redwalls were garagey at times, Big Starish at others. But I was there for you Am I - who ripped out the rock and roll just as riotously as I've seen them do at every other show this year, and had a good time in the process. It was especially fun being there with fellow Aussie Kevs, who would yell out some Oz slang occasionally in as thick a brogue as possible for the benefit of the band. I love my mates.

Time to take a little break now, as Sunset junction is coming next weekend and even though the lineup is quite ho-hum this year, it is literally on my street so I will still be checking it out. And then off to the east coast for a little bit to remember what "humidity" really means...

Adios, Mi Abuelito ~

These are my parents on their wedding day. On the left is my grandmother, and on the dapper looking gentleman on the right is my grandfather, Ramon.

Ramon was born in Spain, outside of Barcelona in the Catalunya region. The impending Spanish civil war sent him on a boat to Colombia with his sisters and mother (people I never knew). He soon met my grandmother and they proceeded to have a whole bunch of kids and a cattle farm, until civil unrest led to the destruction of that farm and sent them all to the city of Cali. My Mom married my Dad - a gringo! (as you can tell from the picture) and moved to California, where I have always lived in some city or another.

I'm sure there is much much more to this story, but the fragments keep trickling in...

When I was growing up, I didn't see my Colombian grandparents all that much as, well, they lived in Colombia. We did visit a few times, and I always remember my grandfather as a silly (in a good way!) man. He took us to the bullfights and made up kooky names for things. He used to hold cicadas by the wings and make them "sing." (I never knew one could play the cicada.) He knew all sorts of jokes and songs that he'd entertain everyone with. He talked to us all the time, even though he spoke a language we didn't really understand and couldn't speak... but we pretty much got it.

In the early 90's, most of my Colombian relatives relocated to Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Amish country. I went to visit one summer and stayed there for about 6 weeks. Every day, my grandfather would come to my aunt's house where I was staying, and walk me to my grandparent's house for lunch. He walked very fast, as do I, so we'd usually zip across this tiny town doing random errands along the way. He would talk to everyone, in Spanish, and they all seemed to really like this eccentric old man and always seemed to know what he was there for. "Sure, Ramon, I can mail this for you." "Yes, it's a lovely day, Ramon." "So this is your granddaughter, Ramon?"

I remember one time, my grandfather asked me to drive him somewhere. (All my relatives like to have me drive because they seem to think California drivers are better.) I wound up taking him down a rural road to a farm, where an Amish family came out to greet him. He jumped out of the car and started chasing baby chicks around. I looked a little terrified and the woman of the house laughed, "It's ok, he always does this. He likes to play with the chickens before he gets his eggs." "Oh," I replied, "is that why we're here? Is that ok?" "We're farmers, we sell our produce. Ramon says we have the best eggs in the area."

Eventually my grandfather began to show his age. A bout of colon cancer left him weak, and then the Alzheimer's kicked in. The last time he saw my mother, he didn't know who she was, and he was speaking gibberish more often than not.

Don Ramon died on Tuesday morning, July 24th. He was 96 years old. I've been lucky to have a life with all 4 grandparents and even one great grandmother, and I guess that means I'll be around for a while. Only in recent years have they all started to pass away. Ramon y Manuela had been married over 70 years, my American grandparents were married 66, and my parents are heading into their 40th. It was a different time, for sure.

But for all the life my grandfather, Don Ramon, lived, and the little time I got to spend with him, I will always remember that he loved it all. He was a funny, friendly man whom everyone loved whether they spoke his language or not. Because they all understood something he always had - a purely genuine smile and great laugh.

Dios los bendiga. Suenen con los angeles.

That's What Friends Are For

My pal, Jason Moore (we like to call him J-Mo) was my special guest on Little Radio recently, as he knows more about music than I will forget in my lifetime. And he's in this kick ass band called The High Society, which is pure old school rock and roll, replete with dirty denim, glitter, beards and lotsa cigarettes. You should check 'em out sometime.

Anyway, I just let Jason take over for the night so he could provide the LR crowd with the evening grooves for their tokin' pleasure. And here's what got played:

It's A Brand New Day

I'm back from vacation. It was wonderful. I was pretty unplugged the whole time, and then towards the end, my cell phone was disconnected. No, no, I'm not that much of a slacker. I WORK for the cell phone company that disconnected me! Sadly, there are one too many morons working in that department right now. Point is, I was fairly communication-free for a while, and it was grand.

So once I plugged back in, I learned that Internet radio will survive! We knew it would, but it tok a lot of voices to make it happen. Here's the scoop as stolen from the Little Radio website:

SoundExchange's Jon Simson promised Congress that his organization, which collects all the future and retroactive payments made by webcasters, will not enforce the rate increase as long as a new deal is in the works between SoundExchange and the webcasters involved in the Copyright Royalty Board hearing. The per-channel minimums are also removed from the discussion, they would have easily shut down companies like Pandora and Live365. And the per-station minimum was also capped at $50,000 a year. This is fantastic news.

According to Wired Magazine's blog Listening Post, Pandora founder Tim Westergren's said, "No one thought those per station fees were remotely rational. It only makes sense that they're being taken off the table." And remember the Copyright Royalty Board? They set those ridiculous fees and got the government involved in this whole process without even taking a meeting with webcasters. Thankfully, they've been left out of the entire process from here on out. SoundExchange and webcasters will now negotiate a new royalty rate with Congress overseeing the whole process.

Isn't that rad? I'm so glad. And soon, I'll tell you about some of the things I saw last week. Like the Decemberists. Yay!

The Long and Winding Post

On Tuesday night, I got a call from my friend Kara. She books the instore performances at Amoeba, so you can guess correctly that she is one very busy lady. We'd been trying to get together for a while, but the timing never worked out. I was very surprised to hear from her, especially considering that she was instrumental to one of the most talked about shows in town: the Paul McCartney free performance the next evening.

She got down to business: "Can you get out of work tomorrow? I'd love to have your help!" Um, yea... no problem. No brainer!

I showed up at Amoeba at noon on the day of the event (Wednesday 6/27, for those keeping track). I set about to work - following Kara around. Actually, I was meeting people in Paul McCartney's camp who I'd need to follow up with during the course of the day. He had quite a team, as you can imagine. He had this very tall, amusing Scottish guy as the head of his security, and a couple other guys setting up the other aspects: the VIP room (formerly known as the Jazz Room), the green room (they brought their own furniture and drapery) the stage setup, the store setup, the guest/VIP list & laminates... It was crazy. And all of this was being done while the store was open.

At 12:30, the people who had been camped alongside the building since MONDAY (some had gone there simply because they heard a rumor Paul might be playing) were at long last given their wristbands for admittance that night. There were lots of happy whoops and yells, as people had come from places all over the US (and the Globe - Japan represents!) and their wait was finally rewarded with something concrete. Kara said to me later, "They have a real community going out there. On Monday night, they got all Deadwood and started numbering each other's hands and stuff so they could keep track of who got there and when."

Then one of the cashiers poked his head into the back office and said, "Um, Cybill Shepherd is here and wants to talk to a manager." Kara said, "Are you kidding?" Nope. Kara and Karen (one of the owners) went to break the news to her that they couldn't get her in. But she got pissy and is actually quite Amazonian, so Karen gave in. I was instructed to go change the guestlist a little. Luckily for Cybill, a couple people had dropped out.

At 4pm, the store closed. Security made a sweep to clear out any customers trying to stash themselves under racks or in freight elevators (rumors I heard) so that sound check could start. Adrienne, who was also assisting Kara, and I went into the VIP area to find out who was handling who. We were told we would most likely have to help with the VIPs. "Let's go to the loading dock and check out what's going on, " she suggested.

That block of Cahuenga Blvd was a worse than a nightmare that day. Directly across the street from Amoeba is the CNN building, where Paris Hilton was arriving to do her post jail interview with Larry King. The entire sidewalk was packed with photographers. On the Amoeba side of the street were mainly rabid Paul McCartney fans and some photographers, waiting for his limo to arrive. Just as Adrienne and I came out, exactly that happened. The limo pulled into the entrance of the loading dock, and Paul McCartney stepped out and threw his arms wide. "Hello!" he shouted to the crowd, and everybody started screaming. (People in the store could hear it too.) He hugged a couple of fans, and then was escorted up the loading dock ramp into the Jazz Room. He walked in, wearing brown board shorts, a loose white shirt over a white t-shirt and flip flops, and said, "Alright - now let's shoplift!"

Adrienne and I were setting up the lines outside for the press and guestlist (contest winners, Amoeba staff, label people) and running around taking care of little things when the sound check started. Amoeba staff had been told to go about their business as the band didn't want to be too disruptive and needed to practice, but that isn't exactly what happened. Many of the VIPs had been brought in about midway through the sound check, and were standing in front of the stage clapping and cheering. One of Paul's managers said to me, "The sound check is often the best part - they have a lot of fun." There was some goofing around, but it was insane to suddenly hear Paul riff with "The Long and Winding Road" on the piano, a song I'd heard so many times, and to have him stop and say, "That good?"

People outside were climbing up onto the windows, trying to take pictures through the glass. It was about 80 degrees out there, and they were standing on the sidewalk off Sunset Blvd, so the heat was intense. Finally the sound check ended, and we had to clear the floor so we could get ready to let people in. I got on the intercom and started making the announcement: "Anyone with a gold, silver, or pink laminate... please move to the left side of the store. Any press or label people, please move to the right side. The center of the store has been designated for the fans, specifically to the encampment that has been waiting for this moment for 3 days." Yet no one would move. My announcements continued getting snottier and snottier: "If you don't move to the right side of the store, we cannot let in the audience and start the show. If you are having difficulty moving the the right side of the store, we have big security guards who can help you get there. It is on your right, the right side of the store." We still had to physically move about a third of these people, who threw lots of attitude, but finally moved.

It was during this time that I had another celebrity sighting - Jennifer Love Hewitt. I can't stand Jennifer Love Hewitt. I was moving people to their proper places and this girl was making goo-goo eyes at me while snuggling into her boyfriend's arm, clinging to him. That was Jennifer Love Hewitt. I asked them what kind of passes they had and she weakly held up a little wrist to show me her wristband, so I walked them to the VIP area, and I swear to God, she was making cutesy eyes at me the whole time. I seriously think she might have been on ecstasy, it was that weird.

Finally, time to let the crowd in... It was done in groups, as we were being very heavily monitored by the fire marshal, who was there with about 5 officers. When the first group of fans made it in, the entire store burst out into cheers and applause, as these sweaty, sunburned fans had more than earned their place in the front row. There was some chaos during load in, but after an hour and a half (a half hour late due to the assholes who wouldn't move after the sound check), we had everybody in.

There were definitely people trying to sneak in. I was told of outrageous monetary offers the people waiting in line were hearing ($10,000 for a wristband?), as well as all the begging and crying. Of the many notes that got passed through the doors, one insisted that a woman dying of cancer was attending, and could her boyfriend come with her as they will never have this opportunity again? The note was passed up by the supposed boyfriend, and we didn't know who the sick woman was. All these notes were addressed to Paul. An older couple appeared from the garage area, which had been closed off at 4pm. Perhaps they were hiding in their car, but they came up claiming that they had been running an errand for one of Paul's guys, a name the man muttered while pretending to be on his phone. He was wearing a laminate, so I pulled it out of his jacket and it was an embarrassing fake. I made them wait by security so I could find somebody to take them out and the Scot came up. "Do you know these guys?" I said to him. "No, but 'd like to find out." Within seconds, they were on the sidewalk.

A few moments later, there was another unexpected voice behind me. "So, where's the show at?" How were these people coming up from the garage? I turned around right into the face of Woody Harrelson, who was there with Alanis Morrisette and 2 other people. There was the scent of marijuana wafting through the air... I'm not sayin', but Woody and Alanis were a little goofy. I said, "Oh! You should have come through the VIP area. We'll have to go outside." He looked at all the people and said, "Uh, I can't go outside..." I was able to have Annie, our third helper, walk them through the store to the right place.

Finally, at 8pm, the show could begin. Celebs in the audience that I knew about included Rick Rubin, Jeff Lynne standing with Joe Walsh, Twiggy, Rosanna Arquette, Barbara Orbison, Michael Eisner, John Laroquette, and - of course - Cybill Shepherd, who dared to bring even more people than allowed and then threw a hissy fit when she was restricted from letting all her people in.

The Very Very Important People of the evening were Olivia Harrison (widow of George), Barbara Bach and her husband, Ringo Starr. "I can say that I remember Amoeba, because I was there," Paul quipped from the stage. "And you were there too, right?" With that, he pointed at Ringo and the crowd went wild... The two surviving Beatles under the same roof. I'm certain there were tears in the audience at that moment - that was one of the most highly charged crowds I'd ever been in.

There were plenty of tears outside of the store, and lots of begging too. The crowd just kept coming after the store had long been closed off, and about 20 minutes into the show, the cops came. They cleared the sidewalk in front of Amoeba, and hundreds of fans lined up across the street and on either side of the building. The front doors of the store were opened to let in air and let out the music. Those people outside clapped and cheered just as much as the ones on the inside.

Okay, so back to the show.

Paul was the "cute" one, and I guess they were all kinda silly, right? Well, Paul was pretty silly during the whole set. He revisited the past by telling the audience that he could do just about anything up there and they wouldn't care, and then proceeded to lead them all in a gibberish call and response. And you know what? The crowd did it. He also told them all that they looked like the kids in the movie "Village of the Damned" and proceeded to do a zombie walk and stare across the stage. He glanced down at the crowd and said, "No, that won't work - you're all still smiling!"

During "I'll Follow the Sun," he faked the crowd out by ending the song and then repeating the last refrain not once, not twice, not three times, but FOUR times! He sang a quick "happy birthday" (the regular version, not his own) to someone in the front, he made fun of the person crazily shouting out requests, and he got choked up when introducing the song "Here Today." He said it was a song he had written with John in mind, but he supposed that now it could also be dedicated to George and Linda. I can guarantee that moment brought more tears.

Highlights for me included "Blackbird," which was the first song I ever learned on guitar. (I couldn't play it today to save my life, though.) "Hey Jude," "The Long & Winding Road," and "Let It Be" also made me pretty happy. All my hippie friends got nuts over "I've Got A Feeling," and I have to say that track got me to pull out the album and blast it a couple times the next day... But by the end of the show, I was standing on the buy counter (where people trade stuff in) near the front of the store with my Amoeba friends Cliff, Henry and Rick, we all couldn't stop dancing when the band busted out "I Saw Her Standing There."

Afterwards, he retired to the VIP area as we ushered people out. A few Amoeba employees went into the back and met the icon, but the guys noticed he was much chummier with the ladies then he was with them. Well, Amoeba girls are cute, what with all their tattoos and piercings and whatnot. Come on!

Sure, music geeks will argue the qualities of John and George and always delegate Paul as the pop guy. But you know what? Those guys are no longer with us. And yes, they are brilliant. But Paul McCartney ain't chopped liver; remember - he co-wrote most of that stuff. And to hear those songs coming from that voice - just a hundred feet away from me - well, it's an experience I won't ever forget. It was amazing.

So, when all is said and done, here's the setlist:

Drive My Car
Only Mama Knows
Dance Tonight
C Moon
The Long and Winding Road
I'll Follow the Sun
Calico Skies
That Was Me
Blackbird
Here Today
Back in the USSR
Nod Your Head
House of Wax
I've Got A Feeling
Matchbox
Get Back
Hey Jude
Let It Be
Lady Madonna
I Saw Her Standing There

And somewhere in the middle of that, he busted out into "Baby Face" (as in, "you've got the cutest little...") which was a corny piano romp. Ever the vaudevillian, eh?

Check out some killer pics on Amoeba's website here.

The Sound of Silence

No, I'm not talking about the blessed silence that kicked in after the helicopters chasing Paris Hilton's Escalade back to her place in WeHo finally called it a night, I'm talking about INTERNET RADIO.

Today is a day of silence for most internet radio stations. It's a way to alert folks to the situation at hand: that if the bill introduced to Congress to make the royalty payment fees fair to internet stations does not pass, and the Copyright Royalty Board's current fees go into effect, internet radio is fucked. You will lose it. End of story.

So please go to Save Internet Radio and contact your Congressional representatives. We don't have much time... July 15th is supposed to be D-day.

Thank you!

Do You Want To Know A Secret?

You know that band from the 60's... that one that had some funky records some people got really into for a while... that one called THE BEATLES?

Well, one of the last two remaining members is going to be performing a free instore show at Amoeba Music in Hollywood.

Yep. Totally true. And by the time you read this post, the news will be out and people will be camping on Ivar for a prime spot. Hell, it's a good time of year for it, right?

The McCartney camp contacted the store some time ago to set this up - I'm guessing it's part of his new alternative marketing strategy. Who cares why? Paul McCartney is going to be doing a free instore at Amoeba! It's my understanding that the Amoeba stage will undergo a bit of a transformation the night before the show. The store itself will be closed from 4-6pm or so that day for, so if you think you can sneak in and get a good place, think again. Camp outside with the other fanatics.

But if you do camp, you should be well rewarded - he's promised to play for an hour or more, and to do songs by that band he used to be in. Wings? Oh no, that other band...

Believe In Unicorns!

Please spread the word... My good friend Heather-Marie, aka Uni & Her Ukelele, was completely fucked by MySpace.

Here's the scoop: She had over 3500 friends before Myspace erroneously deleted her profile on Thursday. Why? Because they believe she was too young to have a profile. Or as they say she "violated the age requirements." This is total bullshit and it's a huge mistake on the part of Myspace. Heather lost all of her contacts, her entire calender of upcoming shows, and her main source of sharing her music on line. Not to mention all of her messages, comments, photos, artwork, and so on. THIS IS A HUGE LOSS FOR HEATHER! And to make matters worse, she's not even in the country. She's on tour of Europe trying to support herself as a musician.

If you know her, you know that Heather possesses amazing talent and has incredible artistic integrity. She recently quit her day job to focus on being a musician and to a large degree, Myspace has pulled the rug out from under her. If you know Heather, or know her music, or care about the state of creativity and artistic expression on-line in general, I encourage you to contact Myspace and tell them they made a mistake. Heather is not underage. She turned 30 on June 6th and doesn't deserve this kind of treatment. So please:

• Write to privacy@myspace.com
• Go to http://www.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=misc.contact
• Do all three, tell them that they messed up and you want Uni's page back up.

Be sure to mention her profile address which was myspace.com/uniandherukelele. Re-post this bulletin. A lot of people still don't know why her profile disappeared and she can use all the help she can get.

THANK YOU!!!!

PLEASE... DO YOUR PART TO SAVE INTERNET RADIO! Visit SaveNetRadio.com and write your Congressperson and Senator. Currently, there is not enough support to pass this bill, and we only have till July 15th. For more info, read on.

From Digital Music News:

Internet Radio Broadcasters Rally Lawmakers Once Again

Ahead of a fast-approaching deadline, US-based internet radio broadcasters continued their push against upcoming royalty increases this week. The refreshed protest included another visit to Capitol Hill, and the announcement of a coordinated day of silence on Tuesday, June 26th. The consortium of broadcasters has been battling a recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) to elevate non-interactive payment requirements on recorded music, a shift that goes into effect July 15th. Just recently, the broadcast group sparked a bipartisan bill that would reverse the CRB-imposed rates, though passage seems unlikely ahead of the upcoming deadline. The lobbying group, rallied by ad-hoc coalition SaveNetRadio, visited approximately fifty lawmakers and also staged an open-air concert.

The bill, known as the Internet Radio Equality Act (HR 2060 / S 1353), was introduced by Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Donald Manzullo (R-IL) in the House, and Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Sam Brownback (R-KS) in the Senate. The Act would replace CRB-approved rates, which involve per-song payments, with a royalty calculation based on overall revenue levels. "The only viable solution is to establish a fair system that supports well-earned compensation for artists who create music and a sustainable business model for webcasters playing that music," said SaveNetRadio spokesperson Jake Ward. Earlier, label representative SoundExchange softened its stance by extending lowered rates to smaller broadcasters, though the proposal drew mixed reviews.

WAIT... THERE'S MORE!

INTERNET DAY OF SILENCE - TUESDAY, JUNE 26

Plans are rapidly coming together for next Tuesday's Internet radio "Day of Silence" event, in which thousands of webcasters will go silent for the day to draw attention to the newly-proposed royalty rates that threaten to crush the industry.

The first three publicly announced participants are Live365.com, AccuRadio.com, and KCRW.com. Additional participants will be announced every few hours between now and the day of the event.

On June 26th, all three of KCRW's music and news streams will go silent. In addition, however, KCRW will loop a one-hour segment called "D-Day for Webcasters" that gives listeners information regarding the industry's current struggle against the CRB rates, including how a number of their favorite webcasts would be impacted, and urges them to contact their representatives in Washington D.C. to ask for their support of the Internet Radio Equality Act.

LIve365 and AccuRadio will cease all music programming for the day, intermittently running brief audio PSAs created by various parties like Spacial Audio's Ken Dardis that will be available at SaveNetRadio.org. The general concept will be a loop of a sound effect that signifies the concept of "silence" (surf noise, static, quiet occasional bleeps, etc.) interspersed with occasional PSAs.

How Are Things on the West Coast?

I have a confession to make. I love Interpol. Like alot.

It's something I only realized recently. I have their albums and love them... Have them on vinyl too, actually. Because I'm a nerd. But a month or so ago, whenever I heard "The Heinrich Maneuver" on the radio, I thought, "Wow - I love this band." And then I thought, "Man, I LOVE this band!" They are just gloomy enough, just disco enough, just monotone enough, just lyrically obtuse enough, just stylized enough, just something.

And they just revamped the website, so check it here. Evidently they filmed the video clip to the track "Pioneer to the Falls" in Griffith Park, before the fire. (Bet they might have preferred to do it after...)

I don't want to meet them or anything. I'd love to see them live (and yes, I've seen them a few times) but they seem to be playing festivals alot and I pretty much don't do festivals. Seeing them live can be a bit of a chore anyway because they tend to be backlit and you basically watch four shadows moving around in some purple fog or something. Yawn.

I don't care about their suits or the Carlos D (has herpes!) hot gossip. If a member of the band was DJing somewhere in Hollywood or Silverlake or something, I probably wouldn't go. But I'm really excited about the new record, and I especially love that it's coming out on my birthday. Because I can't think of a better birthday treat than to lie back on my couch and soak in the latest from the dark popsters, and watch the sun sink below the Hollywood Hills from my living room window while doing so. And the part of the Hollywood Hills that burned down, too. Of course.

I'm actually tempted... Who knows? I may not have a job by next week and have the time to do this!

Instant Karma

This past Sunday, at the debut of Summer Camp, some asshole stole a couple personal laptops and cell phones as well as the keys to the place, among other things. This was more than a drag, since Little Radio loves putting on free events and creating a community for all to play in. I mean, where else could you go on a Sunday for DJs, great music, and Slip N Slide action, for free?

After much howling on our part, the culprit was caught. Everything was returned. INCREDIBLE. No charges were pressed, but don't think that the guy got off that easy...

TO CATCH A THIEF

Hey everyone, meet Ritchie. Ritchie stole 2 computers, a hard drive, 3 cell phones, our cordless house phone and Jimmy's keys from our offices during a free party with free drinks we threw for everyone last weekend.

Here's the whole story…

In the midst of all that chaos, I got to do my show. My anniversary show, actually! I have been back at Little Radio for one year now... What better way to celebrate than with Jim Fairchild? If you missed the interview, download the podcast here when it becomes available.

And now, the playlist:

Trading Twilight for Daylight

Big action on Little Radio today! I'm lucky enough to have an interview with Jim Fairchild that I get to play for y'all tonight. Jim Fairchild is the leader of a new band called All Smiles, but you may know him from his former band, Grandaddy. Jim banished his fears of being a frontman and has released a beautifully low key collection of songs recorded with many friends, which he's supporting now.

Check out All Smiles at Sea Level Records on Monday, June 11 at 7pm. They are also opening for Menomena at the Troubador on the 12th. Which is sold out. Yay!

If you tune in to Little Radio right this second though, you'll catch Greg Dulli of the Twilight Singers / Afghan Whigs on the Scott Ford show. Good times, I'm sure. Besides being a talented guy, Greg is truly the funniest person I've ever known.

So listen to Little Radio today!

Better Be Home Soon

I was unexpectedly home today when the BFF gave me a call to see how I was doing. "Ugh, been better..." I said.

"Well," he responded, "Did you want to go to this Crowded House show at the Hotel Cafe today? It's a publishing thing - a bunch of music supervisors and stuff. Besides, you know the Hotel Cafe guys."

I did. And I also happen to love almost any band from Australia and/or New Zealand. And have always had a very soft spot for Crowded House. On my first visit to Melbourne, the song "Four Season in One Day" bounced around in my head since that town was its inspiration.

So, um, yea - I wanted to go see Crowded House at the Hotel Cafe (capacity 100 or so).

The show was wonderful. They played about 45 minutes or so, but I couldn't tell you what they did because I rarely remember. (I was once told that if you can hardly remember an event like that, that you must have been really into it. I'll take that.) I know they did "Fall At Your Feet" because that song makes me swoon, and I know they closed with "Don't Dream It's Over." And I know that Neil Finn still has a gorgeous, unique voice and I know that Nick Seymour is still goofy. The stage banter was charming and good spirited and the whole thing was incredibly cozy and sweet.

And it all made me wish I could get back Down Unda sooner than later...

Try Not to Die

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM AMP'D MOBILE

On June 1st, 2007, Amp’d Mobile Inc. filed for protection under Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure the business. As a result of our rapid growth, our back-end infrastructure was unable to keep up with customer demand. We are taking this step as a necessary and responsible action to sustain and strengthen our momentum in the market place.

I know, so official, right? I normally don't blog about tech stuff. I'm not a gadget girl. Hell, I can barely use my phone as it is and just sort of wrapped my head around the wi-fi thing in my apartment. Really, I'm lazy. I just like listening to music. If I learn some sort of techie trick, it is generally because I had to in order to listen to or record or mix or edit music or an interview or something.

I only invested in a cell phone in 2003. Out of duress. I was homeless and looking for a home... It was the only way. I remember when I first got my phone, I was kinda freaked out about it. "Now people can find me every second of every day?" And my wise friend Mike said, "It's not like you have to answer it, Mo." I was in the habit of leaving my phone at home, I didn't know about texting till this guy did it to me immediately after a particularly steamy night out. (He was a hunky guy with tattoos and Buddy Holly glasses - what could I do?) That text almost made me visit him in Portland.

Now I love texting. I am never without my phone. And over a year ago, I became the music content manager for Amp'd Mobile.

Oops!

It's been interesting. It's been quite a ride. But still, like I said, I've never been gadget girl, and so it's time to find something a little more true to my soul. They're still getting us paychecks somehow, so I ain't quite on my ass yet.

Somehow I skipped over this whole kinda thing during the dot com craziness when I lived in the Bay Area. Thanks, KALX!

Shout out to my Bay Area peeps: I wanna come home! Send any job info may way... and in the meantime...

SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER!

Hey Hey Hey!

One of my actress friends sent this picture:

She plays a punker chick who throws a burrito at Matthew McConaughey at the beach. They're in Malibu filming his new movie, "Surfer Dude" or something. My roommate refers to him as "Matthew McConau-HEYYYYYY!"

My actress friend said he was really nice. (He's in the striped shorts. Yum.)

I hope he smokes everyone out at the end of the day. That'd be rad.

Loch-spotting

She's back! My favorite legendary creature of the loch, Nessie, has been filmed again!

EDINBURGH, Scotland - She's as much an emblem, and a tourist draw, as tartan, bagpipes, and shortbread. And now Nessie's back. An amateur scientist has captured what Loch Ness Monster watchers say is among the finest footage ever taken of the elusive mythical creature reputed to swim beneath the waters of Scotland's most mysterious lake.

"I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this jet black thing, about 45-feet long, moving fairly fast in the water," said Gordon Holmes, the 55-year-old a lab technician from Shipley, Yorkshire, who took the video this past Saturday.
Is that cool or what? I've gotta get to Scotland, have a drink with Nessie, and then sleep with Ewan McGregor. Oh wait, did I say that out loud?

Let Me Tell You A Secret

This weekend, while I'm fighting traffic in order to get to San Diego and recovered my second car casualty within the space of a year, there will be super top secret fun to be had in Los Angeles. Especially if you're into rock and roll.

Topanga Days! Check out what the yippies and their kids do in the gorgeous firetrap that is Topanga Canyon. The Topanga County Fair runs from May 26-28, 11-6pm at the Topanga Community House located at 1440 North Topanga Canyon Blvd.. There's a bunch of cool music, like Carina Round, the Young Dubliners, John Doe, Spindrift, and Chevy Metal. Chevy Metal, you say? What the hell?

Well, that's the pseudonym for THE FOO FIGHTERS. They don't usually play Foo Fighters stuff, though - they switch it up and Dave gets back on the drums and hell breaks loose. Good times!

Also, on Sunday the 27th, Perry Farrell will be doing his record release party at the Little Radio Electric Vehicles Warehouse in Venice. It's secret, so crash it if you can! That's located at 602 Venice Blvd in Venice. Hot rumor on that one is that, um, he'll be performing a bit as well...

So enjoy your holiday weekend!

Debaser

Warning: drunk post ahead. If I was really trying to be silly, I'd skip the spell check on this one.

Today my friend Scott posted a Pixies bootleg from 1989 on his blog. I'd recommend you all try to download it while you can... It's a bootleg from 1989, Vienna. Soundboard quality. Go here.
It'll only be there a little while...

I don't know why the Pixies captivated me the way they have. Many, many years ago, the BFF called me and said: "Go buy this record. "Come On Pilgrim." It's got a picture of a guy with a hairy back on the cover." I bought it. (I just trust myBFF that much.) And what I heard woke up something primitive and wild in me.... something that caused me to follow this band around
the state of California, and even go to a show after I'd had my foot broken the previous night in a Pixies moshpit.

To this day, I still can't explain it. When the Pixies first reunited and played the Glasshouse in Pomona the night before theirCoachella gig, I stood in front, shouting: "Thank you, thank you..." Is that not the dorkiest thing ever? Well, that's what happened. Even the next day, in front of
50,000 people, I was still testifyin'.

This is the band that inspired TV On The Radio to bust out "Mr. Grieves" in full on Planet Mars audio barbershop quartet. That got Kristin Hersh to do the Wave of Mutilation. That had thousands of college kids, outside of Boston, even, learning Spanish... That had the 7th guy I'd ever slept with too say, "Then God is 7." Dorky, yes, but not in my world. And it sorta matched his initials anyway. Sorta.

I had Pixies friends. People I went to the shows with, people who looked out for me in the pit... and vice versa. I'm still friends with them. The very first show my baby brother ever saw was with me, and it was in October 1989,at the UCSD Price Center, and it was the Pixies, with Bob Mould opening. I remember noticing my little brother was gone...Oh, wait... he's crowdsurfing...

I went to school at UC Berkeley and used to make fun of Deadheads. Then I realized I kind of was one - except for a different band. I followed this band up and down the state. And I can't exactly tell you why. When the Pixies reunited, I went to every Bay Area and LA show. Two shows in one night? I went to both. All. Whatever.

Stuck here out of gas...out here on the Gaza strip... from driving too fast...

All Right Now

Last night on Little Radio, I had another special guest! This one was the lovely and talented Raquel, who I couldn't coerce to do more talking on the mic but who went song for song with me on the tunes. We had a wonderful time - and I hope you did too. It's Not Over Yet...

Okay everybody...

Our actions may not have swayed the Copyright Royalty Board, but it did do something!

The US House of Representatives has introduced H.R. 2060, The Internet Radio Equality Act, to invalidate the Copyright Royalty Board's devastating decision and set Internet radio royalty rates equal to the reasonable rate that satellite radio pays. Please call your House Representative and urge them to sign on as a cosponsor of this important bill!

As many of you have heard, the US Copyright Royalty Board recently set new royalty rates that all webcasters must pay for the music they play. The rates as adopted are triple the current rates (even more for some webcasters) and will likely mean the long-term extinction of most Internet radio. While the royalty ruling will be appealed over the coming months, the immediate killer is that the new rates go into effect on July 15th and are retroactive to January 2006. Some webcasters are facing royalty bills that will immediately bankrupt them.

The Copyright Royalty Board quickly and casually dismissed the webcasters' request for a rehearing on April 16th, and at this point, the only thing that is going to stop a large swath of webcasters from going silent on July 15th is Congressional action.

Please visit :SaveNetRadio.org

Learn more about the situation, contact your Congressional representatives, sign the petition and find out what you can do to help save Internet radio.

Drop your Congressional Rep a line so that they support this bill, or we're toast.

Unpretty

I hate Fergie.

I was never really a fan of the Black Eyed Peas, but I also didn't hate them. I really didn't care one way or another. They were just another Top 40 band that didn't need my help and so I didn't think about them.

But in August of 2005, Fergie peed.

At the San Diego Street Scene, an event that actually used to take place in the street, the Black Eyed Peas were one of the headlining acts. Not only did they hit the stage an hour late, causing the real headliners - The White Stripes - to go on way after scheduled, they were bombed. So bombed that at one point Fergie wandered into a corner and pissed her pants. Then kept performing, piss stain and all.

After the fact, their publicists tried to say it was sweat. Vag sweat? Ass sweat? If that was true, that might actually be more nasty than pissing yourself. Maybe. Then Fergie tried saying that since the band was late, those mean ole concert promoters wouldn't let her even use the ladies room before she hit the stage. So instead, she hit the stage. And pissed on it. Well, that showed them!

At that moment, I realized: I hate Fergie.

Well, she's disgusting pig. A double bagger, as a friend put it. A decent rack and good abs doesn't make up for it. She's known for her "lady lumps?" Is it me, or is that term incredibly non-sexy?

Here are the facts: she can't sing, she doesn't create her own music, she's hideous, and she pisses in public.

Now hand over your babysitting money!

I look forward to the day she goes away. In the meantime, maybe I'll just indulge in that scene in Poisedon where she gets killed by the ocean, finally smashing though the windows of the upturned luxury liner. As my friend Kevs put it, "Any movie that kills Fergie can't be all bad."

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

And now, I'm going to tell you how old I am.

This year, I've been invited to my 20th high school reunion. I wasn't actually invited to my 10th because "they" couldn't find me. "They" were obviously pretty stupid, because my father is a science teacher at the high school I went to, and HE STILL TEACHES THERE. Never mind. I found out about it, and I went.

The reason I went, really, was because of a girl named Tawny Schultz (and I'm sure I've spelled her name wrong). I saw her in a Weight Watchers commercial, and thought, "Tawny! She was so cool. I'd love to see her and find out what the hell she's been up to!" I have a small posse of good friends from high school to this day, and high school wasn't a bad experience for me, so I figured... what the hell. I told the posse about Tawny, and they reacted the same way I did. "Let's go see Tawny!"

We all went together, as we do. One member of the posse, Doug, is also my closest friend in the entire world, but was my boyfriend all through high school. Needless to say, when we walked in together, jaws dropped. Everyone assumed we had gotten married, but -ick! - no way! We had to clear that up real fast in case Doug wanted to hit on any divorcees in the room.

We had fun, but I felt like I had almost nothing in common with anyone in that room. I was working in radio and happily unmarried and living in the Bay Area. They were married, divorced, parents, 9-5. They thought I was really living the life, and I think I was. Am. But everyone was happy and slightly drunk (and very stoned later on... Hey, it's a San Diego beach town - that's what we do!) and it was, genuinely, quite nice to see everyone.

And we did see Tawny Schultz.

And now the 20th reunion is creeping up... And I'm going. I think. I'm trying to convince Doug to go because my Dad has said he would back us up on any lies we may want to tell this time. Like married with 7 kids and a house on each continent or something like that. My Dad works with some of my former classmates and sees the ones who stayed in town at the supermarket or the beach and stuff. That alone could make it a blast.

We'll see. The posse is mostly on board. And we look great for our age. That's what really counts, right?

Faith To Arise

Last night on Little Radio, I was lucky enough to interview a couple of the guys from the LA band EVEREST, and they were as nice as could be. We talked about music, their music, and they picked some other people's music to play as well. They even got me a little drunk afterwards.

The podcast should be available here anytime now...

A Different Light

Kristin Hersh played a show last night with a band, including strings. It was only when we got there that my friend Kevs said to me, "I've never seen her play her solo stuff with a band before."

Then I thought, "Oh yea... this should be good." And it was.

The show was at the El Rey, which was a little on the big side for the evening but still contained a nice crowd of enthused fans. Some overly enthused - obviously, they'd never made it to a KH show and they were STOKED! Personally, I think it's great when someone is that thrilled to be at a show, especially when it's in such a jaded town as LA.

The tunes were mainly from her latest, Learn to Sing Like A Star, and I was happy to hear my favorite from that CD ("Wild Vanilla") right off the bat. The band sounded strong and dreamy... rather, somewhat nightmarish at times. There is a brooding and intensity to her music which was brought out in a completely new way with the full band... and strings. The strings were pretty spectacular, especially on "Sundrops" which was nothing but cello and guitar and vocals. Perfect.

Anyone missing the Throwing Muses would appreciate this particular tour - along with anyone who just wants to see Kristin Hersh rock out without blasting them through the walls like her 50 Foot Wave project is known to do from time to time. So if you haven't already missed this tour, check the website and see if you can still catch it - cuz you should.
(This pic was actually taken elsewhere, but you get the idea.)

Ain't No Mountain High Enough

This week on Little Radio, I'll have special guests. I know! Crazy!

The fellas from EVEREST will be spending a little time with me, talking about themselves and their earthy indie. Their bio says they are "are on the druggier, sleepier side of the latest indie-country wave, but their songwriting is way stronger and (gasp!) actually unique, and they play with about two busloads more feel, coherence, and dynamics than anybody else." And I think that's pretty accurate.

Everest consists of some people you may have heard of:

Pictured here from left to right (sorta): Davey Latter (earlimart, Great Northern), Joel Graves (earlimart, Wild Gift), Russ Pollard (Folk Implosion, alaska!), J. Soda (Everest Recorders) and Rob Douglas.

They'll be releasing an EP soon which was recorded at New Monkey Studios (Elliott Smith's place) with producer Mike Terry (Foo Fighters, The Eagles!), and they'll be playing at the Hotel Cafe on Sunday, May 13th.

Tune in and check out how swell they are, at about 8:30pm on Thursday, May 10th. LittleRadio.com. It'll totally rule. And I'll ask them if they named themselves after that mountain.
