The Sound of Silence
No, I'm not talking about the blessed silence that kicked in after the helicopters chasing Paris Hilton's Escalade back to her place in WeHo finally called it a night, I'm talking about INTERNET RADIO.
Today is a day of silence for most internet radio stations. It's a way to alert folks to the situation at hand: that if the bill introduced to Congress to make the royalty payment fees fair to internet stations does not pass, and the Copyright Royalty Board's current fees go into effect, internet radio is fucked. You will lose it. End of story.
So please go to Save Internet Radio and contact your Congressional representatives. We don't have much time... July 15th is supposed to be D-day.

Do You Want To Know A Secret?
You know that band from the 60's... that one that had some funky records some people got really into for a while... that one called THE BEATLES?
Well, one of the last two remaining members is going to be performing a free instore show at Amoeba Music in Hollywood.
Yep. Totally true. And by the time you read this post, the news will be out and people will be camping on Ivar for a prime spot. Hell, it's a good time of year for it, right?
The McCartney camp contacted the store some time ago to set this up - I'm guessing it's part of his new alternative marketing strategy. Who cares why? Paul McCartney is going to be doing a free instore at Amoeba! It's my understanding that the Amoeba stage will undergo a bit of a transformation the night before the show. The store itself will be closed from 4-6pm or so that day for, so if you think you can sneak in and get a good place, think again. Camp outside with the other fanatics.
But if you do camp, you should be well rewarded - he's promised to play for an hour or more, and to do songs by that band he used to be in. Wings? Oh no, that other band...

Believe In Unicorns!
Please spread the word... My good friend Heather-Marie, aka Uni & Her Ukelele, was completely fucked by MySpace.
Here's the scoop: She had over 3500 friends before Myspace erroneously deleted her profile on Thursday. Why? Because they believe she was too young to have a profile. Or as they say she "violated the age requirements." This is total bullshit and it's a huge mistake on the part of Myspace. Heather lost all of her contacts, her entire calender of upcoming shows, and her main source of sharing her music on line. Not to mention all of her messages, comments, photos, artwork, and so on. THIS IS A HUGE LOSS FOR HEATHER! And to make matters worse, she's not even in the country. She's on tour of Europe trying to support herself as a musician.
If you know her, you know that Heather possesses amazing talent and has incredible artistic integrity. She recently quit her day job to focus on being a musician and to a large degree, Myspace has pulled the rug out from under her. If you know Heather, or know her music, or care about the state of creativity and artistic expression on-line in general, I encourage you to contact Myspace and tell them they made a mistake. Heather is not underage. She turned 30 on June 6th and doesn't deserve this kind of treatment. So please:

Internet Radio Broadcasters Rally Lawmakers Once Again
Ahead of a fast-approaching deadline, US-based internet radio broadcasters continued their push against upcoming royalty increases this week. The refreshed protest included another visit to Capitol Hill, and the announcement of a coordinated day of silence on Tuesday, June 26th. The consortium of broadcasters has been battling a recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) to elevate non-interactive payment requirements on recorded music, a shift that goes into effect July 15th. Just recently, the broadcast group sparked a bipartisan bill that would reverse the CRB-imposed rates, though passage seems unlikely ahead of the upcoming deadline. The lobbying group, rallied by ad-hoc coalition SaveNetRadio, visited approximately fifty lawmakers and also staged an open-air concert.
The bill, known as the Internet Radio Equality Act (HR 2060 / S 1353), was introduced by Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Donald Manzullo (R-IL) in the House, and Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Sam Brownback (R-KS) in the Senate. The Act would replace CRB-approved rates, which involve per-song payments, with a royalty calculation based on overall revenue levels. "The only viable solution is to establish a fair system that supports well-earned compensation for artists who create music and a sustainable business model for webcasters playing that music," said SaveNetRadio spokesperson Jake Ward. Earlier, label representative SoundExchange softened its stance by extending lowered rates to smaller broadcasters, though the proposal drew mixed reviews.

Plans are rapidly coming together for next Tuesday's Internet radio "Day of Silence" event, in which thousands of webcasters will go silent for the day to draw attention to the newly-proposed royalty rates that threaten to crush the industry.
The first three publicly announced participants are Live365.com, AccuRadio.com, and KCRW.com. Additional participants will be announced every few hours between now and the day of the event.
On June 26th, all three of KCRW's music and news streams will go silent. In addition, however, KCRW will loop a one-hour segment called "D-Day for Webcasters" that gives listeners information regarding the industry's current struggle against the CRB rates, including how a number of their favorite webcasts would be impacted, and urges them to contact their representatives in Washington D.C. to ask for their support of the Internet Radio Equality Act.
LIve365 and AccuRadio will cease all music programming for the day, intermittently running brief audio PSAs created by various parties like Spacial Audio's Ken Dardis that will be available at SaveNetRadio.org. The general concept will be a loop of a sound effect that signifies the concept of "silence" (surf noise, static, quiet occasional bleeps, etc.) interspersed with occasional PSAs.

How Are Things on the West Coast?
I have a confession to make. I love Interpol. Like alot.
It's something I only realized recently. I have their albums and love them... Have them on vinyl too, actually. Because I'm a nerd. But a month or so ago, whenever I heard "The Heinrich Maneuver" on the radio, I thought, "Wow - I love this band." And then I thought, "Man, I LOVE this band!" They are just gloomy enough, just disco enough, just monotone enough, just lyrically obtuse enough, just stylized enough, just something.
And they just revamped the website, so check it here. Evidently they filmed the video clip to the track "Pioneer to the Falls" in Griffith Park, before the fire. (Bet they might have preferred to do it after...)
I don't want to meet them or anything. I'd love to see them live (and yes, I've seen them a few times) but they seem to be playing festivals alot and I pretty much don't do festivals. Seeing them live can be a bit of a chore anyway because they tend to be backlit and you basically watch four shadows moving around in some purple fog or something. Yawn.
I don't care about their suits or the Carlos D (has herpes!) hot gossip. If a member of the band was DJing somewhere in Hollywood or Silverlake or something, I probably wouldn't go. But I'm really excited about the new record, and I especially love that it's coming out on my birthday. Because I can't think of a better birthday treat than to lie back on my couch and soak in the latest from the dark popsters, and watch the sun sink below the Hollywood Hills from my living room window while doing so. And the part of the Hollywood Hills that burned down, too. Of course.

I'm actually tempted... Who knows? I may not have a job by next week and have the time to do this!

The White Stripes will be performing a very special show in West Hollywood, CA on June 20th. The band will play a live show for fans at a specially constructed "Icky Thump Records" store on Sunset Boulevard. The location of Icky Thump Records is the site of the former Tower Records flagship store at 8801 W. Sunset Blvd. Tickets for this unique performance will be made available to the first 200 fans who purchase the album at this store, which opens at midnight on Monday, June 18th. Tickets are limited and will be given on a first come, first served basis. A handful of tickets will also be available to listeners of KROQ radio from Friday, June 15 - Sunday, June 17th. The Icky Thump Records performance will be the band's first Los Angeles show since December 2005.

Instant Karma
This past Sunday, at the debut of Summer Camp, some asshole stole a couple personal laptops and cell phones as well as the keys to the place, among other things. This was more than a drag, since Little Radio loves putting on free events and creating a community for all to play in. I mean, where else could you go on a Sunday for DJs, great music, and Slip N Slide action, for free?
After much howling on our part, the culprit was caught. Everything was returned. INCREDIBLE. No charges were pressed, but don't think that the guy got off that easy...
In the midst of all that chaos, I got to do my show. My anniversary show, actually! I have been back at Little Radio for one year now... What better way to celebrate than with Jim Fairchild? If you missed the interview, download the podcast here when it becomes available.

Trading Twilight for Daylight
Big action on Little Radio today! I'm lucky enough to have an interview with Jim Fairchild that I get to play for y'all tonight. Jim Fairchild is the leader of a new band called All Smiles, but you may know him from his former band, Grandaddy. Jim banished his fears of being a frontman and has released a beautifully low key collection of songs recorded with many friends, which he's supporting now.
Check out All Smiles at Sea Level Records on Monday, June 11 at 7pm. They are also opening for Menomena at the Troubador on the 12th. Which is sold out. Yay!
If you tune in to Little Radio right this second though, you'll catch Greg Dulli of the Twilight Singers / Afghan Whigs on the Scott Ford show. Good times, I'm sure. Besides being a talented guy, Greg is truly the funniest person I've ever known.

Better Be Home Soon
I was unexpectedly home today when the BFF gave me a call to see how I was doing. "Ugh, been better..." I said.
"Well," he responded, "Did you want to go to this Crowded House show at the Hotel Cafe today? It's a publishing thing - a bunch of music supervisors and stuff. Besides, you know the Hotel Cafe guys."
I did. And I also happen to love almost any band from Australia and/or New Zealand. And have always had a very soft spot for Crowded House. On my first visit to Melbourne, the song "Four Season in One Day" bounced around in my head since that town was its inspiration.
So, um, yea - I wanted to go see Crowded House at the Hotel Cafe (capacity 100 or so).
The show was wonderful. They played about 45 minutes or so, but I couldn't tell you what they did because I rarely remember. (I was once told that if you can hardly remember an event like that, that you must have been really into it. I'll take that.) I know they did "Fall At Your Feet" because that song makes me swoon, and I know they closed with "Don't Dream It's Over." And I know that Neil Finn still has a gorgeous, unique voice and I know that Nick Seymour is still goofy. The stage banter was charming and good spirited and the whole thing was incredibly cozy and sweet.
And it all made me wish I could get back Down Unda sooner than later...

Try Not to Die

On June 1st, 2007, Amp’d Mobile Inc. filed for protection under Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure the business. As a result of our rapid growth, our back-end infrastructure was unable to keep up with customer demand. We are taking this step as a necessary and responsible action to sustain and strengthen our momentum in the market place.
I know, so official, right? I normally don't blog about tech stuff. I'm not a gadget girl. Hell, I can barely use my phone as it is and just sort of wrapped my head around the wi-fi thing in my apartment. Really, I'm lazy. I just like listening to music. If I learn some sort of techie trick, it is generally because I had to in order to listen to or record or mix or edit music or an interview or something.
I only invested in a cell phone in 2003. Out of duress. I was homeless and looking for a home... It was the only way. I remember when I first got my phone, I was kinda freaked out about it. "Now people can find me every second of every day?" And my wise friend Mike said, "It's not like you have to answer it, Mo." I was in the habit of leaving my phone at home, I didn't know about texting till this guy did it to me immediately after a particularly steamy night out. (He was a hunky guy with tattoos and Buddy Holly glasses - what could I do?) That text almost made me visit him in Portland.
Now I love texting. I am never without my phone. And over a year ago, I became the music content manager for Amp'd Mobile.
Oops!It's been interesting. It's been quite a ride. But still, like I said, I've never been gadget girl, and so it's time to find something a little more true to my soul. They're still getting us paychecks somehow, so I ain't quite on my ass yet.
Somehow I skipped over this whole kinda thing during the dot com craziness when I lived in the Bay Area. Thanks, KALX!
Shout out to my Bay Area peeps: I wanna come home! Send any job info may way... and in the meantime...

One of my actress friends sent this picture:
She plays a punker chick who throws a burrito at Matthew McConaughey at the beach. They're in Malibu filming his new movie, "Surfer Dude" or something. My roommate refers to him as "Matthew McConau-HEYYYYYY!"
My actress friend said he was really nice. (He's in the striped shorts. Yum.)
I hope he smokes everyone out at the end of the day. That'd be rad.

Loch-spotting
She's back! My favorite legendary creature of the loch, Nessie, has been filmed again!
Is that cool or what? I've gotta get to Scotland, have a drink with Nessie, and then sleep with Ewan McGregor. Oh wait, did I say that out loud?
EDINBURGH, Scotland - She's as much an emblem, and a tourist draw, as tartan, bagpipes, and shortbread. And now Nessie's back. An amateur scientist has captured what Loch Ness Monster watchers say is among the finest footage ever taken of the elusive mythical creature reputed to swim beneath the waters of Scotland's most mysterious lake.
"I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this jet black thing, about 45-feet long, moving fairly fast in the water," said Gordon Holmes, the 55-year-old a lab technician from Shipley, Yorkshire, who took the video this past Saturday.

Let Me Tell You A Secret
This weekend, while I'm fighting traffic in order to get to San Diego and recovered my second car casualty within the space of a year, there will be super top secret fun to be had in Los Angeles. Especially if you're into rock and roll.
Topanga Days! Check out what the yippies and their kids do in the gorgeous firetrap that is Topanga Canyon. The Topanga County Fair runs from May 26-28, 11-6pm at the Topanga Community House located at 1440 North Topanga Canyon Blvd.. There's a bunch of cool music, like Carina Round, the Young Dubliners, John Doe, Spindrift, and Chevy Metal. Chevy Metal, you say? What the hell?
Well, that's the pseudonym for THE FOO FIGHTERS. They don't usually play Foo Fighters stuff, though - they switch it up and Dave gets back on the drums and hell breaks loose. Good times!
Also, on Sunday the 27th, Perry Farrell will be doing his record release party at the Little Radio Electric Vehicles Warehouse in Venice. It's secret, so crash it if you can! That's located at 602 Venice Blvd in Venice. Hot rumor on that one is that, um, he'll be performing a bit as well...
So enjoy your holiday weekend!

Warning: drunk post ahead. If I was really trying to be silly, I'd skip the spell check on this one.
Today my friend Scott posted a Pixies bootleg from 1989 on his blog. I'd recommend you all try to download it while you can... It's a bootleg from 1989, Vienna. Soundboard quality. Go here.
It'll only be there a little while...
I don't know why the Pixies captivated me the way they have. Many, many years ago, the BFF called me and said: "Go buy this record. "Come On Pilgrim." It's got a picture of a guy with a hairy back on the cover." I bought it. (I just trust myBFF that much.) And what I heard woke up something primitive and wild in me.... something that caused me to follow this band around
the state of California, and even go to a show after I'd had my foot broken the previous night in a Pixies moshpit.
To this day, I still can't explain it. When the Pixies first reunited and played the Glasshouse in Pomona the night before theirCoachella gig, I stood in front, shouting: "Thank you, thank you..." Is that not the dorkiest thing ever? Well, that's what happened. Even the next day, in front of
50,000 people, I was still testifyin'.
This is the band that inspired TV On The Radio to bust out "Mr. Grieves" in full on Planet Mars audio barbershop quartet. That got Kristin Hersh to do the Wave of Mutilation. That had thousands of college kids, outside of Boston, even, learning Spanish... That had the 7th guy I'd ever slept with too say, "Then God is 7." Dorky, yes, but not in my world. And it sorta matched his initials anyway. Sorta.
I had Pixies friends. People I went to the shows with, people who looked out for me in the pit... and vice versa. I'm still friends with them. The very first show my baby brother ever saw was with me, and it was in October 1989,at the UCSD Price Center,and it was the Pixies, with Bob Mould opening. I remember noticing my little brother was gone...Oh, wait... he's crowdsurfing...
I went to school at UC Berkeley and used to make fun of Deadheads. Then I realized I kind of was one - except for a different band. I followed this band up and down the state. And I can't exactly tell you why. When the Pixies reunited, I went to every Bay Area and LA show. Two shows in one night? I went to both. All. Whatever.

It'll only be there a little while...
I don't know why the Pixies captivated me the way they have. Many, many years ago, the BFF called me and said: "Go buy this record. "Come On Pilgrim." It's got a picture of a guy with a hairy back on the cover." I bought it. (I just trust myBFF that much.) And what I heard woke up something primitive and wild in me.... something that caused me to follow this band around
the state of California, and even go to a show after I'd had my foot broken the previous night in a Pixies moshpit.
To this day, I still can't explain it. When the Pixies first reunited and played the Glasshouse in Pomona the night before theirCoachella gig, I stood in front, shouting: "Thank you, thank you..." Is that not the dorkiest thing ever? Well, that's what happened. Even the next day, in front of
50,000 people, I was still testifyin'.

This one was the lovely and talented Raquel, who I couldn't coerce to do more talking on the mic but who went song for song with me on the tunes. We had a wonderful time - and I hope you did too. It's Not Over Yet...
Okay everybody...
Our actions may not have swayed the Copyright Royalty Board, but it did do something!
The US House of Representatives has introduced H.R. 2060, The Internet Radio Equality Act, to invalidate the Copyright Royalty Board's devastating decision and set Internet radio royalty rates equal to the reasonable rate that satellite radio pays. Please call your House Representative and urge them to sign on as a cosponsor of this important bill!
As many of you have heard, the US Copyright Royalty Board recently set new royalty rates that all webcasters must pay for the music they play. The rates as adopted are triple the current rates (even more for some webcasters) and will likely mean the long-term extinction of most Internet radio. While the royalty ruling will be appealed over the coming months, the immediate killer is that the new rates go into effect on July 15th and are retroactive to January 2006. Some webcasters are facing royalty bills that will immediately bankrupt them.
The Copyright Royalty Board quickly and casually dismissed the webcasters' request for a rehearing on April 16th, and at this point, the only thing that is going to stop a large swath of webcasters from going silent on July 15th is Congressional action.

Unpretty
I hate Fergie.
I was never really a fan of the Black Eyed Peas, but I also didn't hate them. I really didn't care one way or another. They were just another Top 40 band that didn't need my help and so I didn't think about them.
But in August of 2005, Fergie peed.
At the San Diego Street Scene, an event that actually used to take place in the street, the Black Eyed Peas were one of the headlining acts. Not only did they hit the stage an hour late, causing the real headliners - The White Stripes - to go on way after scheduled, they were bombed. So bombed that at one point Fergie wandered into a corner and pissed her pants. Then kept performing, piss stain and all.
After the fact, their publicists tried to say it was sweat. Vag sweat? Ass sweat? If that was true, that might actually be more nasty than pissing yourself. Maybe. Then Fergie tried saying that since the band was late, those mean ole concert promoters wouldn't let her even use the ladies room before she hit the stage. So instead, she hit the stage. And pissed on it. Well, that showed them!
At that moment, I realized: I hate Fergie.
Well, she's disgusting pig. A double bagger, as a friend put it. A decent rack and good abs doesn't make up for it. She's known for her "lady lumps?" Is it me, or is that term incredibly non-sexy?
Here are the facts: she can't sing, she doesn't create her own music, she's hideous, and she pisses in public.
Now hand over your babysitting money!
I look forward to the day she goes away. In the meantime, maybe I'll just indulge in that scene in Poisedon where she gets killed by the ocean, finally smashing though the windows of the upturned luxury liner. As my friend Kevs put it, "Any movie that kills Fergie can't be all bad."

Should I Stay or Should I Go?
And now, I'm going to tell you how old I am.
This year, I've been invited to my 20th high school reunion. I wasn't actually invited to my 10th because "they" couldn't find me. "They" were obviously pretty stupid, because my father is a science teacher at the high school I went to, and HE STILL TEACHES THERE. Never mind. I found out about it, and I went.
The reason I went, really, was because of a girl named Tawny Schultz (and I'm sure I've spelled her name wrong). I saw her in a Weight Watchers commercial, and thought, "Tawny! She was so cool. I'd love to see her and find out what the hell she's been up to!" I have a small posse of good friends from high school to this day, and high school wasn't a bad experience for me, so I figured... what the hell. I told the posse about Tawny, and they reacted the same way I did. "Let's go see Tawny!"
We all went together, as we do. One member of the posse, Doug, is also my closest friend in the entire world, but was my boyfriend all through high school. Needless to say, when we walked in together, jaws dropped. Everyone assumed we had gotten married, but -ick! - no way! We had to clear that up real fast in case Doug wanted to hit on any divorcees in the room.
We had fun, but I felt like I had almost nothing in common with anyone in that room. I was working in radio and happily unmarried and living in the Bay Area. They were married, divorced, parents, 9-5. They thought I was really living the life, and I think I was. Am. But everyone was happy and slightly drunk (and very stoned later on... Hey, it's a San Diego beach town - that's what we do!) and it was, genuinely, quite nice to see everyone.
And we did see Tawny Schultz.
And now the 20th reunion is creeping up... And I'm going. I think. I'm trying to convince Doug to go because my Dad has said he would back us up on any lies we may want to tell this time. Like married with 7 kids and a house on each continent or something like that. My Dad works with some of my former classmates and sees the ones who stayed in town at the supermarket or the beach and stuff. That alone could make it a blast.
We'll see. The posse is mostly on board. And we look great for our age. That's what really counts, right?

A Different Light
Kristin Hersh played a show last night with a band, including strings. It was only when we got there that my friend Kevs said to me, "I've never seen her play her solo stuff with a band before."
Then I thought, "Oh yea... this should be good." And it was.
The show was at the El Rey, which was a little on the big side for the evening but still contained a nice crowd of enthused fans. Some overly enthused - obviously, they'd never made it to a KH show and they were STOKED! Personally, I think it's great when someone is that thrilled to be at a show, especially when it's in such a jaded town as LA.
The tunes were mainly from her latest, Learn to Sing Like A Star, and I was happy to hear my favorite from that CD ("Wild Vanilla") right off the bat. The band sounded strong and dreamy... rather, somewhat nightmarish at times. There is a brooding and intensity to her music which was brought out in a completely new way with the full band... and strings. The strings were pretty spectacular, especially on "Sundrops" which was nothing but cello and guitar and vocals. Perfect.
Anyone missing the Throwing Muses would appreciate this particular tour - along with anyone who just wants to see Kristin Hersh rock out without blasting them through the walls like her 50 Foot Wave project is known to do from time to time. So if you haven't already missed this tour, check the website and see if you can still catch it - cuz you should.

Ain't No Mountain High Enough
This week on Little Radio, I'll have special guests. I know! Crazy!
The fellas from EVEREST will be spending a little time with me, talking about themselves and their earthy indie. Their bio says they are "are on the druggier, sleepier side of the latest indie-country wave, but their songwriting is way stronger and (gasp!) actually unique, and they play with about two busloads more feel, coherence, and dynamics than anybody else." And I think that's pretty accurate.
Everest consists of some people you may have heard of:

Burn Hollywood, Burn...
Haven't I used this title for a post recently? Maybe, but that's because for the third time in as many months, the Hollywood Hills have gone up in flames.
There was a little one that only residents noticed, and there was a bigger one that the world noticed, because when fire rages behind the iconic Hollywood sign, folks think the end of the world is near. Why? Because that's what they've seen in the movies. You know Los Angeles has been destroyed if the Hollywood sign goes down.
Tonight is a rager behind the Griffith Observatory, a much more beautiful symbol of LA. And it's been in the movies too! (That's where James Dean gets into trouble in Rebel Without A Cause, ditto for the crime fighting gals in Charlie's Angels.) The fire started this afternoon. I was having a leisurely sick day up by my friend's pool under the Hollywood sign, enjoying the 90 degree heat and slight Santa Ana winds, when we saw the smoke rise. Raquel sent me a photo from her place down the street:
As the day went on, the smoke came and went, and helicopters zoomed over us on their way to refill their water buckets at the Lake Hollywood reservoir. Finally it seemed to be going away and the reports said it was contained... until it leaped over the ridge and started creeping towards the Observatory. Then all the rich people in Los Feliz were evacuated to Marshall High in Silverlake (which is the high school they used in Grease. Really, how many movies can I reference today?)
This is how it looks from my living room window:
Already our place is getting all ashy. Animals at the zoo have gone indoors, but there are still no structures in the fire line. About 600 acres of Griffith Park have burned. Now helicopters (a regular occurrence in LA anyway - hey, did you see Short Cuts? It's true!) are zooming past our windows to collect water from the Silverlake reservoir (that's our "silver lake," people. Raymond Chandler calls it "Grey lake" in The Big Sleep.)
And the best part about it is... It looks like arson. Gotta love it when that happens. Especially when we still have at least 6 more months of scorching hot and dry weather, in a year where LA has seen about 4 inches of rain. Not the time of year to chuck your cigarette butt aimlessly.

As the day went on, the smoke came and went, and helicopters zoomed over us on their way to refill their water buckets at the Lake Hollywood reservoir. Finally it seemed to be going away and the reports said it was contained... until it leaped over the ridge and started creeping towards the Observatory. Then all the rich people in Los Feliz were evacuated to Marshall High in Silverlake (which is the high school they used in Grease. Really, how many movies can I reference today?)
This is how it looks from my living room window:
Already our place is getting all ashy. Animals at the zoo have gone indoors, but there are still no structures in the fire line. About 600 acres of Griffith Park have burned. Now helicopters (a regular occurrence in LA anyway - hey, did you see Short Cuts? It's true!) are zooming past our windows to collect water from the Silverlake reservoir (that's our "silver lake," people. Raymond Chandler calls it "Grey lake" in The Big Sleep.)
And the best part about it is... It looks like arson. Gotta love it when that happens. Especially when we still have at least 6 more months of scorching hot and dry weather, in a year where LA has seen about 4 inches of rain. Not the time of year to chuck your cigarette butt aimlessly.

Cuz I'm A Punkrocker
No I ain't.
But I've been to plenty of shows with very active mosh pits. And shows that deserved it too... X and Oingo Boingo (in the 80's, fool!); I was even knocked out at a Fishbone show. Don't challenge me in a Mudhoney pit. And I proudly wear my greenstick foot fracture from a Pixies show on my sleeve, er, foot, er... you know.
But people nowawdays will mosh/slam/stagedive to anything. Which means I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the fact that I was nearly taken out at a Teddybears show.
While the punkers of eras past were at the Patty Smith show across town, I was invited to the El Rey to see Honeycut open for The Teddybears. My friend Bart Davenport is the singer for this Bay Area band, which is comprised of SF superstars and well regarded musicians around the globe. These boys got together to play as a lark, but wound up becoming one of Quannum Records most successful acts and indie groove darlings on their own. Their debut (because I hope there will be a second release), The Day I Turned to Glass, is a trippy collection of soul psychedelia with an electronic beat and a big fuzzy heart and left leaning politics to go along with it.
They had just come from a sold out gig in SF at the Fillmore opening for Jarvis Cocker, who Bart said was "a class act. He even let me fix his hair before he went onstage!" But here they were, playing in oh-so-unwelcoming LA, and getting a $20 bill shoved at them by a happy audience member (he we later found out was the guitar player for the Teddybears.) But the crowd somewhat willingly danced along, and the boys sounded awesome.
Of course, they were the opening act. The place was soon packed with fanatical Teddybears fans, a Swedish act (with at least one member of the Ceasars in the group) which does that rock and roll electronica that Fat Boy Slim made so popular. Guest vocals and stuff. Guitars, keyboards, drums, bass. A real band, now that I point it out. Except for the drummers (there are 2), the Teddybears wear suits and giant bear heads on stage. "I put on one of those heads backstage," Bart told us. "I don't know how they can play - you can't see a fucking thing!" Well, I suppose if you practice enough...
The show was fun. The music was fun. The bear heads were mildly unsettling. The videos in the background were all clips from famous cult films (The Warriors, Spinal Tap, Clockwork Orange, Scarface, etc...) where the main characters in the scene had their heads digitally replaced with the Teddybear heads. That was kinda cool.
Now either the El Rey has the weakest stage security ever, or the Teddybears have the cleverest drunken fans ever, because people just kept getting up on stage. Usually, a security guy would escort them off, and then you'd see them back up a little while later. Everyone was rowdy and dancing. Then, a guy decided to stagedive. Because the Teddybears have a song called "Punkrocker" which features Iggy Pop, maybe? They weren't doing that song at the time, but maybe just the idea of it? I know I feel compelled to stagedive at dance music shows. Right.
Anyway, he takes his flying leap, right towards me & Raquel & Bart. Since the crowd doesn't really know what to do in this situation (and the guy was diving at a bunch of girls, and, well, Bart's on the small side) the seas parted and the guy hit the floor. Not before he kicked Raquel in the chest, punched Bart in the balls, and knocked me to the floor on top of a collection of bottles and glasses. Then he was gone. Thankfully my lip didn't get too swollen from the hit, and Raquel got some ice for the welt on her chest, and Bart could feel his nuts again by the end of the night (which was a bonus since he met a hot Brazilian girl).
But really - at the Teddybears show? I wonder how that guy would have reacted if he'd been dropped into a Germs pit circa 1978...

Puerto Rican Top 40
A couple Fridays ago me & my pal Raquel went and saw Ricky Martin.
Or shall I say, RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRicky Martin! (Make sure you roll those R's.)
Raquel & I Heart Ricky. This was actually our second time seeing the bon-bon shakin' singer; the first time was 9 years ago on the 'Vida Loca" tour. We had 13th row floor seats.
This time, we were stageside. My roommate used to work for the concert promoter and got us last minute tickets which allowed us to have that particular view. It was amazing. Not only could we see up Ricky's right nostril, but we could look around the entirety of the jam-packed Staples center and witness weeping women, dancing gays, and lots of Puerto Rican flags.
The BFF used to always get annoyed with Ricky because "he is a fat gay man trapped in a think straight man's body." Well, Ricky's bulked up a bit since then, so maybe he's on his way to discovery? Ricky also was a bit of a hippie, prone to rambling between songs about things like the beauty of the earth and the special wonder of children and his gratitude towards all things on the planet and stuff. Hmmm... the last time we saw him, he was more concerned with keeping his balance while dancing on top of a Ford Mustang.
Not to say that the stage spectacular was not in evidence here. The backing of the stage area was ripped off from the Chicago jailhouse scenes - fire escape-ish bridges and ladders ready made for dancing on the ceiling. Drop out in the floor made for quick appearances and disappearances of the dancers. There were a couple costumes changes, audience flirtation, and a glorious moment when all the dancers emerged only to run around the stage with lit flares puffing massives amounts of pink smoke. Yes, PINK smoke.
Oh yea, the music. Well, I've never been crazy into pop, but I do love the Latin stuff, so Ricky gets away with it in my book. But really, when he gets all Puerto Rican and brings in the crazy percussion and sings in Spanish (which he did most of the night), it's quite good. I'm not kidding. There's a reason why Ricky Martin launched Latin pop on the world when he performed 'La Copa De La Vida" at the Grammy's so many years ago... Because he is truly vivacious, charismatic, fun, and has an awesome voice.
He is, however, kind of a lousy dancer. The first time around, we noticed that he shook his ass alot and let his dancers run around him, creating the illusion that he could dance. This time, he incorporated some capoeria moves, but still pretty weak on the dancing front. Still loads of ass-shaking.
Well, as my mom says, if you want singing AND dancing, try Chayanne. Now HE can dance!

Sooooooo, guess what the House of Representatives went and did yesterday? From broadcastlaw blog:
The Internet Radio Fairness Act was introduced in the House of Representatives today, proposing several actions - most significantly the nullification of the decision of the Copyright Royalty Board raising royalty rates for the use of sound recordings by Internet radio stations.
See what a little petition signing and letter writing can do?
So, along with that news, Little Radio will NOT be going off the air anytime soon. Yay!!!

LITTLE RADIO TODAY...
Well, Scott Ford is going above and beyond the call of brotherly-in-law duty, and helping his lovely sister-in-law Gwen to get a date. I've never met her, but I've met her sis (the beloved of Scott) and she is such a wonderful person that I have no doubts about Gwen. So tune in to Scott's show today fom 1-4 PST, and play to win! Here are the rules:

Everybody Must Get Stoned!
So I read that the Rolling Stones are playing in Serbia and the usual drug haze that goes with those shows will be centered over the stables nearby...
BELGRADE - A plan to sedate more than 300 horses stabled at Belgrade's racecourse to keep them calm during a Rolling Stones concert there has enraged Serb animal lovers who are lobbying to have the gig moved to another venue.
The concert is expected to draw more than 100,000 people to the Hippodrome, Belgrade's largest fenced space. The horses will be only a few meters from the stage.
Actually, I think this sounds like a terrible thing to do to the horses. Why shoot them up with sedatives when the marijuana contact high will work just as well?

We're Not Gonna Take It!!

The Copyright Royalty Board today denied the Motions for Rehearing of their decision raising the royalty rate for the use of sound recordings on Internet radio stations for 2006-2010. The Board found that the Rehearing requests did not demonstrate that there was any manifest error in the initial decision, and did not introduce any new evidence that could not have been introduced in the original hearings. Finding that these standards for rehearing were not met, the motions were all denied. The Board decision was brief, not addressing in any specifics the issues raised in the rehearing motions.
Oh, there's more, but you can read it on the site. We can still have our voices heard (as they haven't been yet!) and hopefully still have a chance of keeping internet radio in America alive. Because even if we get shut down in the US, we can still listen to other stations all over the freakin' world... but where would that leave our unsung heroes? If you couldn't listen to college, internet-only or non-commercial stations on the web, how would you hear music from Wilco, Interpol, Tom Waits, Aceyalone, Earlimart, Elliott Smith, Iron & Wine, the Twilight Singers, Bright Eyes, and so many other bands that never (or rarely) get commercial airplay? Yes yes, I know we lived without the internet before, and discovered music in our own ways, but this is another tool which should not be lost to us solely because of corporate greed.
So please, sign the petition and/or write your Congressperson today. I heard back from Barbara Boxer herself! (Or at least one of her assistants pretended to be her, which was cool.)

Born To Rock
There are just SO MANY things about this ad to love... My favorite thing about it is that they farmer-tanned air guitar wielding stud has the word "AIR" waxed/shaved into his chest hair. If only I had the skills to make this image larger so that you could see it... but trust me, it's damn sexy.

So guess what? I'm Podcasting!!!!
Well, kinda. Little Radio is now able to archive some shows, so if you missed it or have never had the chance to tune in, now you can download the podcast and check it out! Please test the cyberwaves - the water's fine.
Simply go the the Little Radio website and click on "Radio" in the sidebar menu to see a schedule of shows. When you click on The Mo Show, you'll see what podcasts are available. And test out the other kids too...
Soooooooo coooool! And all the more reason to SAVE INTERNET RADIO. Don't let it get priced out of existence in the United States. That's just stupid.

Idol Worship
I realized over the weekend that my dad has a little crush... on Carrie Underwood. Isn't that cute?
I've been spending alot of weekends with my parents for the last couple of months because my mom's been quite ill and they could use the company. In fact, she's been hospitalized since January 23rd. It's a whole new culture over there, hanging with the nurses, other hospital regulars and watching lots and lots of basic cable. Thank God that San Diego basic cable includes TCM, because me & the folks can generally agree on old movies. We also watch alot of the Travel Channel and some Animal Planet. We mostly hate reality TV, but my parents love game shows or talent contests of any sort, especially on the Latin Channels.
I don't mind watching the Latin channels so much - it keeps me familiar with Spanish (although my Spanish speaking skills are dismal at best) and I kinda feel like I know what about half of the world is up to. Really. These shows are huge in Central and South America as well as a large contingent of the U.S. We watch alot of dance competitions, some dating shows, and "Vas O No Vas!" which is the Spanish version of "Deal or No Deal." I didn't understand the English version of that show, but somehow the Spanish version got through to me. My dad and I like to play "Find the Fake Tits!" while watching.
Last weekend brought about a discussion of American Idol, a show I've only watched once. It was the final episode of Season 1 - Kelly vs. Justin. I didn't watch the whole thing, just parts of it. My roommate was watching. It got very "Up With People" (these sunny Christian pop troupes that would tour around the country in the early 80's... Hey, I went to Catholic school. We knew about these things.) and that vibe creeped me out. Never watched it again.
But I did continue to be involved... I worked at a publishing company for a couple of years and would help the AI team get clearances for literally hundreds of songs every season. It was interesting. Songwriters would be stoaked to have their songs on the show - it always meant a spike in sales for them. Some songwriters specified when their songs could be performed: finalists only, no auditions, no William Hungs! (Really, can you blame them?) Some also specified that the original performer could not be imitated during the AI performance in any way.
The supervisors were always pretty savvy about what they picked for their contestants. The year of Carrie Underwood (Season 4, I think), the music supervisor knew she had a country singer on her hands. Since the show mainly does Top 40 pop, we fished out those songs with country leanings to show off Carrie's pipes in just the right way. Guess it worked!
I was discussing this with my dad and he said, "Well, that was the right thing to do. Carrie Underwood is very talented." Me: "Oh, you've heard her?" Dad: "Sure, they play her on the radio." "I thought you listened to NPR all day." "Well, sometimes I listen to other things."
Then my mom cut in. "He likes her." "How do you know?" "He watched the Country Music Awards this year because she was on it."
Busted!! "You did?" "Well, it seemed like she would probably do very well, and she did." "Yea, but when was the last time you remembered to tune into the Country Music Awards?" "It just happened to be on..."
Riiiiight...
