I am really, really afraid of some citizens in our country. Please check out this Washington Post article, and please spread the word. THE DEMOCRATS NEED TO TAKE THE WHITE HOUSE. Aren't we in enough of a mess? Sigh...

Does the Truth Matter Anymore?

This is not false naivete: I am genuinely surprised that John McCain and his campaign keep throwing out false charges and making false claims without any qualms. They keep talking about Sarah Palin’s opposition to the Bridge to Nowhere without any embarrassment over the fact that she once supported it. They keep saying that Barack Obama will raise taxes, suggesting he’d raise them on everybody, when Obama’s plan, according to the Tax Policy Institute, would cut taxes for “about 80 percent of households” while “only about 10 percent would owe more.” And as Sebastian Mallaby pointed out in his recent column, Obama would cut taxes for middle-income taxpayers “more aggressively” than McCain would.

And now comes a truly vile McCain ad accusing Obama of supporting legislation to offer "'comprehensive sex education' to kindergartners." The announcer declares: "Learning about sex before learning to read? Barack Obama. Wrong on education. Wrong for your family."

Duuuuuude!

At 4:20 pm last Sunday, I saw "Pineapple Express."

I am not a stoner. The last time I smoked anything even remotely mind-altering, I got really silly for a moment, embarrassed the friend I was with, and then fell asleep. Afterwards, he said, "Remind me never to let you smoke weed again."

One time, when I was a freshman in college in Berkeley, I went with some folks from my dorm to see the Grateful Dead. I lived in the Bay Area - it's a rite of passage there (or, it was while Jerry was alive, anyway). We were all sitting in the nosebleeds at the Oakland Coliseum, and passing a joint around. I smoked some, and dozed off. I could hear one of my floormates, Jack, through the haze of my sleepiness: "Duuude, check out Mo. She's really getting into it!"

So yea, pot really isn't my thing.

"Pineapple Express," though, is my thing. Over the last couple of days, I've discovered that most of my friends who have seen it didn't like it, and that those who haven't seen it have only heard bad things about it. But I love it. I've seen it a couple times again already. I liked it better than "Tropic Thunder." Really, I did! I think it's ridiculous, sweet, obnoxious, and crawls under your skin hilarious. And if you're scared to see it, fine. But it made me really happy during an insanely stressful week, and my summer fun film award goes to "Pineapple Express."

Yum.

One of my BFFs (yes, I have multiples.. kinky!) is friends with Paris Hilton. I met her once. She was nice, and wearing ridiculous shoes.

And now she does this, which makes me not feel guilty for liking "Stars Are Blind."

Where Did Mo Go? Part 1...

I vanished from the internets for a while... Personal stuff. Working too much. Seeing some shows. Traveling.

I thought, to get us back in the swing of things, that I would tell some tales from the last couple months, a bit at a time.

I saw Yeasayer back in April...

The story goes: Coachella asked them to pause when they got to LA, just in case there was room to put the Brooklynites on the Indio bill. You see, acts performing at Coachella have a clause in their contract that says they can't play within a certain mile radius of Los Angeles within a certain time frame. (Of course, those super sorta secret shows never count.) So Yeasayer didn't book an L.A. show.

That's the rumor anyway.

And the, it didn't happen. Scrambling for a show, they hooked up with super hipsters, No Age, for an old school all ages show at the Ukranian Cultural Center in Silverlake. A place I'd drive by just about every day and wonder about... Tickets were being sold the night of the show at the ice cream place around the corner.

Being a super geek about this band, I got in touch with them via the ever-so-handy MySpace and asked if I could do an interview. The singer, Chris, wrote me back to say they would be SO happy to do that! I was pretty pleased.

As the show got closer, I figured it was going to be a pretty loose affair as we were just going to try to meet up after the show. I did find Chris before the show, and he was sweet as can be, and SO happy to be meeting up with his girlfriend after a long tour. (That should have been red flag number 1.) I then met Jason, the band's manager and label owner for We Are Free - a collective of sorts when it comes to music, management, and etc. Jason was also a nice guy, pretty busy (as managers are) but taking time out to bring me to the rest of the band so we could say hi and chat a bit. But this wasn't interview time - they wanted to take care of that biz after the show.

The show? Fan-fuckin'-tastic. They are so impressive live. I can't honestly describe their music and do it justice. Just go to their website and download some. Really. It's like indie hippie folk world music or something. And if all those things sound like bad things to you - well, they aren't when you mix 'em all up into Yeasayer.

After the show, well, everyone was a little drunk and/or stoned. Wrangling that band would have been like herding kittens, as they say. They were finding friends, getting hugs, eating hot dogs, smoking, and - well - generally relaxing and having a good time. And who was I to disrupt that with my little MP3 recorder? Sigh... no interview this time. But one day...

The Sounds of Summer

On July 7th, I was lucky enough to get to interview Kristin Hersh for the billionth time. Actually, it may have been the 3rd or 4th, but it's a blast every time.

She graciously drove out form her secret desert locale to chat and sing some songs for us that the Little Radio studios. We talked about paranoid grandfathers out to get squirrels, the new 50 Foot Wave record, and what color her songs are... among other things. If you want to download the podcast, go here:

Kristin Hersh at Little Radio, 7/7/08

On July 9th, she played a show called "The Shady Circle" at the Hotel Cafe, which was as morose, gloomy, and straight up hilarious as Kristin's shows tend to be. I mean, where else can you hear someone describe the next song as "One about true love and then a bit of 'stab-stab'"? It was a collection of Appalachian folk songs mixed in with some appropriate KH tunes and covers, and it was worth a tear or three.

Back in February of last year, my friends over at Amoeba were kind enough to ask me to come by and interview her there as well. It was one of the worst interviews I ever did, no fault to Kristin. I was just having a mental break that day. But it all worked out, because that chick is a pro. Here it is if you feel like watching:

A HUGE thanks to Kristin for dropping by Little Radio... She is a real treasure to the music community, so check out her website and get some music, ya hear?

DUDE.

Really. I grew up with this. Loved every minute of it too. Miss it quite often. Really.

And when I get back to Encinitas, I'm gonna visit Swami's and hear some more.

And LAUGH...

(Thanks Scotty!)

They Come in 3's...

My grandfather, my mother, and now my grandmother..

Mi abuela - Manuela Tenorio. She passed away on Easter, although the news made its way to us faraway relatives a little later than that. She was the matriarch of the clan, a brood of energetic and rowdy (in the best way) Colombians whom she ruled with discipline and food, or so I've been told.

In 1990, when these relatives first relocated to the East Coast, I was sent to stay with them for about 6 weeks. Every day, my grandfather would come collect me and take me to their house, where my grandmother would be in her "office" making massive quantities of food. We'd have a huge lunch (usually about 6 courses) and then she'd pack the rest up into containers. My grandfather would then walk to every relative's home, put their food in the fridge, and drop me off knowing that the family had dinner for the night.

I knew that after my grandfather passed, my grandmother wouldn't be far behind. Even in the depth's of his advanced Alzheimer's, he would still pass by my grandmother in her wheelchair, and say, "Bonita, bonita..." They held hands till the last minute, so I'm glad they can be together again.

Dona Manuela Ines Tenorio - que dios los bediga a todos.

Adventures in Austin

SXSW 2008... in Pictures! With some notes, of course.

Two Gallants - aka Two Furious Boys who make Furious Noise.

Bon Iver - He overcame the chaos of the street with his melancholy tunes... asking the crowd to sing loudly the "what might have been lost" part of the track "Wolves (Act I & II)," drowning out the drunken revelry down below.
Yeasayer by night - an incredible (and far too short!) set of hippie indie goodness.
Los Campesinos - The sun and heat forced these pasty Brits to reveal some skin, and at one point, the singer claimed he was going to take everyone's cameras and erase the pics of themselves so the rest of the world couldn't see their pastiness. They missed mine, obviously.
Howlin' Rain - The grooviest, possibly hairiest set of all.
Liam Finn - Cute & Little & Hot & Sweaty & Melodically Noisy.
Devotchka - Nick Urrata calmed an impatient Billy Bragg audience and swoons ensued.

Everest - LA boys done good! Completely rockin' in the free world. With abandon.Sally Jaye - backed by Brian Wright & the Waco Tragedies, a beautiful country voice in our world.
Moving Picture Show - Matt showing his guitar chops.
X - More fun in the new World. (No picture of Billy Zoom as he freaks me out a bit these days.)
Duffy - absolutely charming in a Dusty-meets-Lulu way, and a fantastic performer too.
The Heavy - out of Noid, UK... The singer jumped off the stage and freaky danced with me, probably because I'd just taken this pic and the security guy got mad at me.
Slim Cessna's Auto Club - Zombie tent revival rock and roll.
The Mint Chicks - howling their way out of New Zealand.

Yeasayer by day - Yes, I saw them twice, because they were THAT AMAZING.The Night Marchers - John Reis (RFTC) gets skinny and rock wildly with his new band.
The Breeders - Bang on, ladies.
See you next year, Austin!
