Hugh Jackman Got Me Pregnant!

I'm just kidding.

Really, I saw "Australia!" the other day, and he is so goddamn butch in it, I swear that I conceived immaculately just from watching.

Oh, and I loved the movie. I also love all other Baz Lurhman films. Really!

And speaking of totally gay musicals - have you seen this?

Completely genius.

To Die For

Um, you know how I ranted a little about those Black Friday sales?

Well, you may remember how on December 3rd, 1979, 11 people were killed trying to get into a Who concert in Cincinnati. It was due to the festival seating policy, and when people were allowed in (late), they crushed each other trying to get to the good seats.

Flash forward to November 28th in Long Island new York - Wal*Mart. A 34 year old man was trampled by shoppers eager to get the best deal at a post Thanksgiving sale. Dozens of people were knocked down, including a pregnant woman.

Cross the country to Palm Desert - right by Coachella here in Southern California... Two men get into a fight (it's unclear about what, though their girlfriends were involved) which ends in the two of them shooting each other to death. Inside a packed Toys R Us store.

In both instances, people were reluctant to leave the store and miss out on the sales.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if both locales had been blown off the face of the earth, because I don't want these people to reproduce if they are so callous as to fight for a sale or toy over the dead body of an employee or customer. But that's just me.

Anyway, get more info on it here.

As for me... I'm going to be supporting local businesses and artisians. Or ordering online. Because no way in hell am I going to Toys R Us for that Tickle Me Elmo... they'll shoot your eye out!

Overindulgence

On this Thanksgiving Eve, I'd like to talk to you about gluttony.

No, not the food coma kind so many will indulge themselves tomorrow (although that's pretty disgusting), but the shopping kind that comes immediately afterwards.

This year, it feels like those commercials trying to draw people into various "Black Friday" sales have been even more aggressive, no doubt because retailers are horrified about the prospects of their bottom line looking more holiday "red" than black.

But I would never be able to get myself out of bed at 2am to be at a 4am sale, in the hopes that I might be one of the lucky few able to purchase a $2000 television for just $500. And I would certainly never be able to take days off work (uh, losing income) to wait in line in low temperatures, rain, snow, etc... with others who are camping out in front of a Best Buy living off Starbucks and Quiznos for that same TV deal.

I know times are hard. Hell, I'm a freelancer and put myself through college- you don't need to explain to me the worry about where the next paycheck is coming from. But surely there have to be things in life that are more important than having a plasma screen television? Or getting the bets deal on the planet for the latest copy of Rockband?

Ah, America. I know I live here and all, but some things I just don't get. Good luck to them campers!

Anita Bryant Rolls Over

I was gonna say she rolls over in her grave, but she ain't dead yet. Although today, she may wish she were...

In the '70s, she oversaw one of the most hateful campaigns against the gay community ever seen, voicing that "If gays are granted rights, next we'll have to give rights to prostitutes and to people who sleep with St. Bernards and to nail biters." See the logic? But her very vocal "Save Our Children" campaign worked, and it led to a repeal of a Florida state ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. In other words, she made it okay to fire or not hire a gay. This was not changed until 1998.

It went further though... In 1977, Florida made it illegal for gays to adopt children. But those days are over as well...

Judge overturns Florida ban on adoption by gays

-- A Florida circuit judge Tuesday struck down a 31-year-old state law that prevents gays and lesbians from adopting children, allowing a North Miami man to adopt two half-brothers he and his partner have raised as foster children since 2004.

"There is no question, the blanket exclusion of gay applicants defeats Florida's goal of providing dependent children a permanent family through adoption," Judge Cindy S. Lederman wrote in her 53-page ruling.

"The best interests of children are not preserved by prohibiting homosexual adoption."

Read it and weep
, Anita!

Chicago Hope

After the election, I was so happy about Obama that I cried (just like half the country, it seems). But then the California results came in, and Proposition 8 has passed... meaning that a little more than half of my beloved state had decided to enact legalized bigotry, making gays 2nd class citizens.

A few nights later, I had dinner with a married ("Or maybe now the citizens of California have decided we're divorced?") gay couple. They had lived in Chicago for quite a few years, and one of them had met (and brunched with) Obama on occasion. They both said that our new President was a big fan of the gays, and always stuck up for gay rights while in office in Illinois.

"I noticed that he gave a shout out to the gays in his victory speech," I commented.

"Oh yea," said Charlie. "We understand that he had to get elected. But once he is in office, I fully believe that he will do what he can to forward the gay agenda, because he sees it as a rights issue as well."

So, when I browsed Obama's Change.gov website, I came across this:

"While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect." -- Barack Obama, June 1, 2007

The site goes on to note that he will oppose a constitutional ban against gay marriage (take that California, Arizona & Florida!), expand adoption rights to include gay couples (take that Arkansas!), and repeal "Don't Ask Don't Tell," among other things. It's all right here in his civil rights agenda.

I will keep my fingers crossed that in my lifetime, all of my fabulous gay friends will be able to get married, if they want to. No one should be denied that choice.

D-I-V-O-R-C-E!

Divorce is wrong. It destroys families. And we know how important 52% of the population of California think families are: so important that traditional marriage needs to be legislated. A man and a woman only. So all you divorced parents, you screwed up. You single parent families, step families, etc.. None of you are cool either. Did any of you vote Yes on 8? Because you voted against yourself too.

I am really, really afraid of some citizens in our country. Please check out this Washington Post article, and please spread the word. THE DEMOCRATS NEED TO TAKE THE WHITE HOUSE. Aren't we in enough of a mess? Sigh...

**********

Does the Truth Matter Anymore?

This is not false naivete: I am genuinely surprised that John McCain and his campaign keep throwing out false charges and making false claims without any qualms. They keep talking about Sarah Palin’s opposition to the Bridge to Nowhere without any embarrassment over the fact that she once supported it. They keep saying that Barack Obama will raise taxes, suggesting he’d raise them on everybody, when Obama’s plan, according to the Tax Policy Institute, would cut taxes for “about 80 percent of households” while “only about 10 percent would owe more.” And as Sebastian Mallaby pointed out in his recent column, Obama would cut taxes for middle-income taxpayers “more aggressively” than McCain would.

And now comes a truly vile McCain ad accusing Obama of supporting legislation to offer "'comprehensive sex education' to kindergartners." The announcer declares: "Learning about sex before learning to read? Barack Obama. Wrong on education. Wrong for your family."

Duuuuuude!

At 4:20 pm last Sunday, I saw "Pineapple Express."

I am not a stoner. The last time I smoked anything even remotely mind-altering, I got really silly for a moment, embarrassed the friend I was with, and then fell asleep. Afterwards, he said, "Remind me never to let you smoke weed again."

One time, when I was a freshman in college in Berkeley, I went with some folks from my dorm to see the Grateful Dead. I lived in the Bay Area - it's a rite of passage there (or, it was while Jerry was alive, anyway). We were all sitting in the nosebleeds at the Oakland Coliseum, and passing a joint around. I smoked some, and dozed off. I could hear one of my floormates, Jack, through the haze of my sleepiness: "Duuude, check out Mo. She's really getting into it!"

So yea, pot really isn't my thing.

"Pineapple Express," though, is my thing. Over the last couple of days, I've discovered that most of my friends who have seen it didn't like it, and that those who haven't seen it have only heard bad things about it. But I love it. I've seen it a couple times again already. I liked it better than "Tropic Thunder." Really, I did! I think it's ridiculous, sweet, obnoxious, and crawls under your skin hilarious. And if you're scared to see it, fine. But it made me really happy during an insanely stressful week, and my summer fun film award goes to "Pineapple Express."

Yum.
